How to (Easily) Save Over $1,000

Do CFL Bulbs really save you money? Here are the numbers.

(QCI Clean.com) July 16, 2009 - A lot of people have been asking me lately if using energy efficient, CFL bulbs, which cost more than traditional light bulbs, will really save them money. It’s well known that they are better for the environment, but from a business standpoint, the bottom line is that people want to save money. So here is the truth.

The best way to answer this question is based on averages that are available by the U.S. census. According them, the average U.S. home has 40 light bulbs (This includes ceiling and lamps). On average, changing one 60 watt traditional bulb to one 13 watt CFL bulb will save $42 in energy over it’s life time, and last 6-10 times longer than traditional light bulbs.

Done the math yet? That means if you have 40 light bulbs and replace them with CFL bulbs, over the lifetime of the bulbs, you will save $1,680 dollars in energy costs! Now those numbers are just for an average home. It’s likely your work establishment has much more than 40 bulbs. But even so, replacing just a fraction can help you save big.

Bottom line, how much will it cost you to purchase the bulbs and what are the yearly savings, after the cost. Here is the break down in an easy to read manner.

Cost of 40 13 Watt CFL Bulbs: $335.60

Savings broken down over 8 years, including initial cost of the bulbs.

Year 1: (-$125.6)
Year 2: $84.4
Year 3: $210.00
Year 4: $210.00
Year 5: $210.00
Year 6: $210.00
Year 7: $210.00
Year 8: $210.00

Total Savings: $1,344.00
